What is LAHLA studio?

A collection of info-graphics and design-led homewares made by me, Lahla. Everything I design has a focus on food, whether it’s growing it, serving it up beautifully for friends for just taking delight in it – and how great it tastes!

How did it come about?

LAHLA studio came together from a number of things, after finishing my degree (BA Product Design Sustainable Futures), I moved to London and by chance ended up working in the kitchen of London’s only ‘sustainable’ conference centre. This was a great time for me to explore my love for cooking and experiment with lots of wonderful ingredients and dietary needs – Vegetarian, Gluten Free, Raw.

A year later, I found myself working with Worn Again, a one of a kind ‘upcycling’ business. My job was to create visuals that explained their very complex logistic system – and ultimately try to sell ‘upcycling’ to corporates.  This is when I found David McCandless’s book Information Is Beautiful and first discovered the term 'info-graphic'.

Over the next few years, I freelanced with giftware businesses like SuckUK, Another Studio and Reiko Kaneko. Finally, LAHLA studio was born, a combination of my accrued skills and madness for anything food!

What is the best bit about running your own business?

Number one is having the freedom to work in a way which suits me – usually, late starts and late nights! The other thing I love is that with each new product, I try to use a different manufacturing process. I like to think of each new creation as an excuse to develop my skill set. Watch this space, new products are in the pipeline!

Buy British Day - This Friday!

Its the official Buy British Day this Friday (3rd October 2014). A celebration of all things British made and the high quality manufacturing that has made Britain famous around the world.

If you would like to see a host of great British made products this weekend, Best Of Britannia are running a 2 day pop up department store in Clerkenwell, London's beautiful Farmiloe Building. Hopefully, we'll be there next year too!

Eat with the seasons in 2015

Over the last month we've been drawing a lot of veg and we are now proud to introduce our new A1 wall calendar for 2015.

Each month is displayed with the fruits and vegetables that are in season then at the top of the calendar month - so its easy to see what is at its ripest when your jotting down your dates.

Each illustration presents the vegetables as they look when growing, not after they have been trimmed or packaged as we usually see them in the shops. Who knew Brussels sprouts grew on a single stem?

We've been working on these little beauts for a long time now. They launched in May and have been flying out the door since.

The Pot & Shovel collection includes three sets: Eggpot & Shovel (eggcup and spoon), Pot & Shovel, a delightful ice-cream bowl, come houmous dish, come fruit salad vessel! And finally two dainty salt and pepper cellars.

Each piece is hand crafted in Stoke-On-Trent from fine bone china.

Everyone knows that tea tastes better in bone china - but - so does ice cream! Eating with a ceramic spoon takes away that metallic flavour that can sometimes mess with your scoop. RRP £24

Restaurant Review: Princi Soho

Friday night in Soho, usually not for the fainthearted.  Princi the Italian pizza, dessert and bakery emporium makes it more than just a bit manageable though.

We had been given a tip off that Princi had the softest most melt in your mouth pizza dough imaginable so, this weekend we gave it a try for ourselves. Firstly, we were lucky enough to bag a spot in the window, a great place for people watching and slow dinning (especially on a Friday night in Soho). Princi's interior is warm, bright and feels very much like a rather swish Italian canteen - I can imagine finding this place in the heart of Rome. I loved the copper coloured table top and brass rails.

They have a vast wine menu and a good selection of small appetisers. Notably, very good olives! 

Our pizza was served up by friendly, helpful waiting staff and was suitably heaped with fresh rocket and artichoke hearts. The dough was indeed delicious - with tasty char-grilled crusts. These are great pizzas - a tab more salt would be good but otherwise, high up there on the pizza scale.

If you would like to try Princi for yourself be sure to arrive early. They don't take booking and this place has a good reputation so be prepared to queue.

Restaurant Review: Technology is served up at Inamo

Technology is served up at Inamo in London's Soho district.

Inamo restaurant allows dinners to order food, alter their table lighting, virtual tablecloth design and watch the chefs in the kitchen at work all from a inbuilt control on the tabletop. I tried it for myself last week.

I had seem a few unfavorable reviews about this place before visiting but was still keen to try out the interactive dinning experience and have a game of Battleships during dinner. Unfortunately, the food at Inamo didn't quite deliver. The maki rolls were like something you'd expect from Yo Sushi, the Nasu Dengaku was undercooked and the shitake mushrooms were so over seasoned that I had to leave them. If you are passionate about what you eat, I would give Inamo a miss. This place clearly relies on it's novelty interactive dining experience and the passing tourist trade to fill it's seats. On a more positive note, the serving staff were very friendly and the overall experience was fun. A good first date spot!

Restuarant Review: Mezze jackpot in Exmouth Market

(my 1st attempt at a restaurant review)

Today’s food find was an unexpected and brilliant surprise. After a lazy morning myself and Mr TJ headed for brunch in Exmouth Market - Enjoying the rare British sunshine and with no cuisine preferences in mind (also very rare) we took up the window seats in Morito. After over 10 minutes *scrutinising the menu we finally ordered a selection of tapas style small plates, homemade minty lemonade and freshly squeezed OJ.

…long story short, everything arrived delicious and beautifully presented. Fresh and zesty, the beetroot borani is an absolute must try (see pictured). All the things that delight me in a restaurant were there, to my surprise. Weighty cutlery, sharp knives, decent quality (finger print free) glasses, Aesop hand soap and olive oil already waiting on your table - visit Morito if you appreciate attention to detail! All of that said, the best thing (food aside) is that it isn’t too fancy or too spotless or too trendy. The decor has an authentic pinch of Spain. Veneered bar tops, mirrors and eclectic framed pictures spread over half bare walls, exposed vents and boxes of food supplies squeezed into every available shelf. You can prop yourself up at the bar and enjoy a coffee, snack or dinner here. Morito, like you’ll find in much of Europe is about conversation, taking you’re time and really delighting in delicious, simple food with lots of punch.  You will not be disappointed!

*I’m horrendously indecisive - especially when confronted with a good selection of vegetarian friendly dishes (no risotto in sight).
